An Event Planner’s 6 Steps to Practice for Living Your Best Life

No matter who you are or what your job title may be, we’re all constantly striving for the best. We work hard to succeed, build positive relationships and create a fulfilling life that makes us and those around us happy – or at least we try to. Life is busy and it’s easy to get caught up the “get the job done” mantra. With that in mind, I’d like to take a slight departure from my usual event related insights to talk about what it means to move you in the direction you really want and live your best life.

To be fair, I generally shy away from using clichéd statements like “living my best life” but as an entrepreneur who is constantly striving for greatness it’s a fitting description of the practices I employ to reach my goals.

In early August I was lucky enough to attend the Power of Success conference here in Calgary. I have been following Rachel Hollis for over a year and I love that she’s out there being honest about all aspects of her life. The foundation of her message in both Girl Wash Your Face and Girl Stop Apologizing, is a reminder that we are all responsible for how our lives are going and we have the power to change things at any given time. We simply have to make the choice.

It’s a message I’ve taken to heart which brings me to my list of 6 practices I follow to help me live my best life.

Practice One Integrity

This is high on my list. In business character is everything. I want to work with people I can trust and I want to be that person to others. It’s important to know that the people around us have the integrity to make the right decisions and do what they commit to doing. This philosophy alone has been a major contributor to my success over the years.

Practice Two Focus

I often remind my son that when we stop comparing ourselves to others and focus on what’s in front of us, we can be engaged in so much more. It can be easy to constantly look over your shoulder at the competition but that only distracts you from your own goals. It’s important to keep your eye on the ball and I’ve found that working on the next practice (Gratitude) can help with that.

Practice Three Gratitude

I started practicing daily gratitude years ago. It’s been a game changer that’s really helped keep my priorities straight. When you’re actively looking for things to be grateful for, it helps keep you grounded and if you’re anything like me, you’ll find the world is full of kindness. Living life with an attitude of gratitude creates opportunities for abundance that you would never expect.

Practice Four Balance

As most entrepreneurs can attest, when you’re responsible for your own paycheck, you learn how to hustle. In the event business, the days can be long and I’ve found that I had to shift my mindset to stay balanced. It’s easy to turn your computer on and respond to clients around the clock but the biggest key to living my best life, has been taking the time to travel, entertain, read and decompress. It’s instrumental in staying fresh and focused.

Practice Five Ownership

Years ago I had a life changing epiphany: I am responsible for my own happiness.  I will repeat that. I AM RESPONSIBLE FOR MY OWN HAPPINESS!

Along with that, I also came to the realization that within any situation where things might not be going as planned that I needed to identify what my expectations were and take responsibility for my part. The funny thing about ownership is that once you’re willing to look at yourself critically and take responsibility, you have the power to focus on the real issues and solve any challenges that may come your way.

Practice Six Practice

I started to consider what I wanted for “my best life” in my 30s, and today it actually looks very much how I envisioned it. I have work I’m passionate about, with clients I love. I’m surrounded by amazing people and have so much to be grateful for. But, truthfully nothing comes easily and every day is an opportunity to practice all of the above steps. Some days are easier than others but when you have the intention and determination to make your vision a reality it’s the practice that will get you across the finish line.
